The first part of this talk will cover several aspects related to electric cars. Starting from a quick overview, to how these cars work, and what to look at for an electric car, to the differences between those type of vehicles and the conventional ones. The second part will cover the entire life cycle of electric cars from mining (materials requirements for production), to production (manufacturing), the use phase by drivers, then when it reaches its End of Life (EoL); the final disposal such as recycling, landfilling, or incineration of their parts and components.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a well-established environmental impact assessment methodology that used by business, industry, and academia to estimate the emissions from a process, an activity of or a system from the cradle to the grave. From the mining stage to the final disposal; when a product reaches its EoL. This 6-hours talk and workshop target scholars, businesses, industries, as well as the experts in the electric cars industry for whatever their expertise. The people who are interested in these types of cars and the electric car industry as well the people who concerned about the electric cars technology on reducing the environmental impacts (e.g., air pollution) and want to see how these technologies compete with the traditional cars with regards to both the environmental impacts and the public health aspects. This talk and workshop are also beneficial for experts who are interested in the LCA method. This talk and workshop will provide a theoretical and a practical LCA case study.
Technically, electrical, electronic and mechanical engineers can get involved in how to (1) measure and assess the emissions from the electric cars, and (2) design, develop or enhance the technology electric car for improving the environmental performance of production, transportation, and final disposal. E.g., the mitigation of climate change and air pollution. It will raise the public awareness for the use of electric cars, where the LCA is a proven approach to develop/enhance new environmentally-friendly technologies. The talk and workshop will cover the LCA theory, a practical case study with LCA modeling, comparison of some aspects with the traditional cars and how to utilize LCA methodology for improving the technology from environmental and sustainability aspects. It will also touch on the existing LCA data (Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)) that can be used for estimating the emissions and evaluating the entire lifecycle; including the available LCA software packages.
During the workshop, an industry leading software, a demo/free version of SimaPro LCA (developed by PRé Sustainability) will be used. The attendees can download a free copy from https://simapro.com/try to their computer to practically learn about the LCA concept, the LCI data used by LCA software packages such as SimaPro, explanation of an example LCA model by the presenter. Then, the attendees can practice a simple case study of LCA study on their personal computers with the help of the presenter. Handouts of the talk and the presentation will be distributed in advance.
